Travel Tales: Hello again, Boracay!

This is the first of a three-part series on my Region VI/Boracay-Guimaras-Iloilo trip. Part 2 can be found here (Leg 2: Guimaras). Part 3 can be found here (Leg 3: Iloilo City).

Our year-end planning (sort of) was to be held for three days in sunny Boracay — that means free round trip tickets, lodging, and the occasional meal. Just a few of our awesome job perks, see. But then, we thought, since we were already in Boracay, why couldn’t we stretch our vacation a few days longer and visit a few other places along the way?

So that was the plan. Here’s how we went about our Region 6 getaway 🙂

Leg 1: Boracay Island (4d3n)

It was my second time in Boracay, so I knew much of what to expect: nightlife-loving crowds, algae in the water, and glorious white sand. So much has been said about Boracay, so let me just tell you about a few things we did (aside from a couple of hours of meetings):

1. Took pictures of the sunset. Perfect conditions on our first afternoon there: just the right amount of cloud cover. Perfect for jump shots!

The jump shot!
Everybody else is outside, taking a picture...
...save for this couple, who just waded out to the sea. I don't know who they are, but they're lovely subjects.

2. Went to Jonah’s (Station 1) for their famous fruit shakes. Their avocado banana and choco banana peanut flavors are worth trying.

This is my very talented friend Edison, with the obligatory fruit shake shot.

3. Ate at Andok’s up to two times a day, since we were on a budget.

4. Listened to really awesome reggae bands (while everyone else went clubbing) at Bom Bom Bar (Station 2). Drinks are supposedly cheaper there too.

5. Hired a boat to take us island hopping, banana boat riding, and helmet diving. For a group of 35, we paid P600 each.

Photobombed by a fish!
Seriously though, sadly, aside from about two square meters of coral, the rest of the surroundings was just sand. If it was due to dynamite fishing, we don't know.

6. Made a crazy music video at Puka Beach about a girl being beautiful because she doesn’t know she is.

6. Went to D*Talipapa to buy souvenirs cheaper than those at D*Mall. Sundresses by the White Beach Walk are also cheap.

7. Talked, philosophized by the beach with friends, about things we wouldn’t talk about at school.

Station 3 at night

Aside from our 3d2n at La Carmela de Boracay, we spent another night at the Orchid Resort (Station 3). It’s a couple of minutes’ walk from the beach, but I loved its rustic feel. It’s made of nipa, with lovely lamps made of shells, and in the middle is an orchid garden. For P915 a night for a quad sharing fan room — in Boracay — it was a great find! The owner also helped us secure a van going to our next stop, and gave us shell necklaces before we left.

Boracay was getting a little too tiresome, so I was rather glad that my travel buddies and I (12 of us in all)  left for our next stop: Guimaras!
